Change In Logo

After repeatedly looking at my existing logo and thinking there was something missing from it, I started to feel like my logo wasn't good enough and I wanted to change it.
I wanted to use a more colorful picture to represent the city and I wanted to get rid of the sun because it looked too childish. I thought including more colour would link with the idea of the different lights around the city. I also thought the idea of just one building doesn't represent the idea of a city which is what it was meant to be based around.

After re creating my logo many time, I created this.

I am a lot happier with this logo and I feel like it will go well with the style of my trailer. The colours are really bright but soft to support the idea of a happy and romantic film. I stuck with the same style of font for the title, however i got rid of the shadow and created a reflection instead so it sat perfectly above the picture. I finally added an effect to make the image look sloped just to make it more interesting. all together the logo is more eye catchy and looks a lot more professional for a trailer based on a romance.

Setting/Location

1ST LOCATION

The first form of setting would be Shirley High School. I’m going to use the front playground when the character Daniel is seen walking up, the front gate to show the character Sam waiting and watching them and also the corridor where the couple first make eye contact. It would be during school hours so there will be other children in the background. I want this effect to make it look more realistic. I’d probably need some sort of permission from a teacher to say that it is acceptable to film around the school.

2ND LOCATION

The second setting will be Lloyd’s Park. I want to use the park as the place where the two characters Sophie and Daniel meet. It will be in the afternoon so it should still be light out. I chose this park because it is big and open to everyone and there are lots of areas of the park that I could film in. I want to use the woods in Lloyd's Park as well to create the dramatic, tense atmosphere between the characters, Sophie and Sam. It will be a bit darker at this point to really set the dangerous mood.

3RD LOCATION

I will probably use the street outside my house in the evening to show a bit of the attack scene. This area is quiet so shouldn’t draw much attention to what we are doing. No one but my neighbours goes down there. I will do it when it is dark out to really emphasise the attack and to still link with the realistic sense that most danger happens at dark. This is another place where I probably won’t need permission because it’s just outside my house, however I would probably need to warn my neighbours in case they don’t realise its acting or think we are too loud.

4TH LOCATION

The last location that I would need to use is my living room. It would be lit to make it look like a safe place. And it will show the comfort and warm of the relationship. I would probably need permission from my parents to make sure it is okay for a part of my house to be in the video.

Plot Synopsis Of My Movie

The whole plot of my movie is the highs and lows of the young couple, Sophie and Daniel. After his mum passes away, Daniel is forced to move in with his dad. He has to start a new school and decides to keep his distance from people; he doesn’t want to fit in or be a part of anything. He hates going home as he doesn’t get along with his dad so plays guitar in the park for hours after school. One day, he is lucky enough to meet Sophie, a girl from his school that he instantly makes a connection with. They talk for hours every day for months and slowly start to create a relationship between them. Everything is going great for the couple until Sophie’s ex-boyfriend Sam comes into the picture. Sam tries to win Sophie back by turning up to her school, her house and trying to buy her new things. He ends up ruining everything when he and his mates attack Daniel when he is on his way home. Daniel’s dad starts to worry that things are getting too out of hand so forbids him from seeing Sophie anymore. Daniel doesn’t take this well and they end up arguing. By the end of it, Daniel expresses how lost and betrayed he feels by his mum and is comforted and supported by his dad. From that moment on, his relationship with his dad has grown stronger. Sophie and Daniel continue to stay strong and forget about Sam until he tries to set Sophie’s house on fire when he is drunk one night. Sam is caught and is sent straight to prison. At the end of the movie, we see Daniel and Sophie leaving school and going on holiday together. They are strong, happy and enjoying the time they have as a young couple.

Script

Voice over - Daniel (Ronnie) walk through school on his own.
(music starts - soft, tense music to show the feelings of the character Daniel)
Sophie (Niamh): Have you ever felt alone?... Lost?...Unwanted?
But then you have that moment, when your eyes connect from afar and you know, you just know, that everything will be okay.
(new music starts - more upbeat and romantic)

Conversation in park - Sophie (Niamh) and Daniel (Ronnie) first meet.
Sophie (Niamh): Hey
(pause)
Sophie (Niamh): I'm Sophie (holds out her hand)
Daniel (Ronnie): Daniel (shakes Sophie's hand)
(music from previous scene is carried on through to this scene (sound bridge))

Conversation in woods - Sam (Jack) tries to get Sophie (Niamh) back.
(romantic music continues from climax section to give the dramatic effect from the scene (sound bridge))
Sam (Jack): it's me you need to be with! (grabs Sophie's arm)
Sophie (Niamh): Leave me alone Sam! (pulls away and starts walking off)
Sam (Jack): No! (grabs her arm again and pulls her close to him) I wont let you be with him! I won't let you go!

Fight scene - Sam (Jack) tries to get rid of Daniel (Ronnie)
(dramatic music continues (sound bridge))
Sam (Jack): Stay away from her!
Daniel (Ronnie): (laughs) Never!
(sudden stop in music)

Conversation in house - Romantic scene on couch.
Sophie (Niamh): What are we gonna do?
Daniel (Ronnie): (smiles) Whatever  it takes.
(music calms down and becomes quieter so the dialogue can be heard clearly as its the most important text)

Group Plan

WORKING ALONE

I have decided to work on the media product alone. I thought it would be easier for me on my own so I could experiment with my own ideas in the way that I want to do it. I feel like I might be restricted if I was in a group. I also wanted to work at my own pace and not have to stress about getting work done quickly for other members of the group or the work not being at a good enough standard to meet their work; I didn't want to have the responsibility of letting others down.

Target Audience

Most romance films are targeted at females rather than males. Women are known to be the more emotional side of relationships so women are able to connect with the characters more and feel the emotions that they are portraying in the movie. Romance movies can also be watched by boys, but it is quite rare; stereotypically, men are known to prefer action, adventure and some sort of violence in movies. However, a huge target audience is couples, especially young couples.

Due to the rating of my film being a 15, the age range for my target audience would probably be from 15-25; possibly even older. This age group includes the young couples who are likely to watch the film together. I also believe that people over the age of 25 might look at the actors/actresses in the trailer and think straight away that it would be just a teen movie.

I gave 5 different people my questionnaire about the target audience for my movie.

Results from audience questionnaire:

GENDER:
3 female, 2 male
AGE:
10/13 - 2
14/16 - 0
17/19 - 2
20-25 - 1
25+ - 0

DO YOU ENJOY WATCHING MOVIES:
Yes - 3

No - 1
Sometimes - 1
DO YOU ENJOY ROMANTIC MOVIES:

IF YOU PUT YES, PLEASE EXPLAIN WHY:
  1. I like the emotions and romantic side of the couples
  2. I like watching romantic movies with my girlfriend
  3. There relaxing and enjoyable to watch
  4. I can always relate to the characters and they make you want that perfect relationship
DOES A FILM TRAILER INFLUENCE YOU TO WATCH THE FILM:
Yes - 3
No - 0
Sometimes - 2

Where do you find out about new movies?
Online trailers - 2
TV trailers - 2
Magazines - 1
Posters - 0
Cinema - 0

WHERE DO YOU PREFER TO WATCH MOVIES:
Cinema - 0
At home - 3
Online - 1
Other - 1
j
From the results you can tell that most people prefer to watch movies in the comfort of their own home. This is why people mostly find out about movies from either TV trailers or online trailers. Cinema isn't as popular anymore due to streaming and downloading via the internet, so i'm not surprised that cinema wasn't ticked for anyone's answer. All the girls like romantic movies due to them being enjoyable to watch or being able to relate to the characters and end up wanting that perfect relationship that the movie always portrays, however one boy said he likes romance films when he can watch them with his girlfriend which links with the idea of young couples being a good target audience.

Analysis of The Lucky One

TEXT
Straight away we see the audience approval text to say that it is definitely suitable for the audience age given by the BBFC. 28 seconds in we see the production company logo, WARNER BROS. PICTURES and VILLAGE ROADSHOW PICTURES. The logos appear at a point of tension; an explosion has just gone of and the character has just fallen to the floor. Putting the logos after this gains the audiences attention makes them want to carry on watching to then find out what happens next. Towards the end of the trailer, we get the name of the production company again to state that it is them who created the film. Further on, we see the names of the main characters involved in the movie. This is a good way to promote the movies because it shows that well known actors/actresses are part of it so people can tell that it will be a good film. Finally we see the name of the movie. All text so far has been in the same font and size, however the title of the movie is shown in a bigger size to make it look like the most important part. Following the title, 'THIS SPRING' appears on screen to identify when the movie will be released. Finally we get the name of the directors, producers and executive producers as they are a big part of the movies as they are the ones who created it. Sometimes, if you know the name of the director, you know what kind of movies they make. This then enables the audience to realize if they would enjoy watching the movie.

SOUND

First of all we hear a voice over as a sound-bridge of the main male character; what he is saying links directly to what is going on in the scene. There is also a soft, melodic piece of background music as well that is playing as the voice over occurs. This music sets the mood as quite soft and innocent which then allows the dramatic scene of the explosion to look extra big. Once the helicopter sound starts to fade, a new background music starts with a powerful beat which has a link to the sound of the beat machines at hospitals. This makes the audience believe that something big is about to happen or that the main man is going to get hurt. Towards the middle of the trailer, the audience start to get the idea that this movie is a romance. The tone of the music becomes more romantic, happier and upbeat which links to the scenes of the couple laughing and kissing. When the scenes of struggle and tears occur between the couple, ,lyrics start in the music. These lyrics link with the emotions and desperate need for one another in the couple. These lyrics grab the audiences attention and allows them to link with the emotions being expressed at that point in the trailer.

EDITING

after each scene there is a fade transition to the next. This links with the genre of it being a romance film. Towards the end of the trailers, the transitions get a bit faster to add more tension to it. This lets the audience believe that there are gonna be struggles within the couples relationship. There is also jump cuts between the couple being romantic and then something getting in their way. This again proves that they are going to have to put up a fight to be together. This draws the audiences attention because it makes them connect with the characters and some people might understand the pain and effort that these characters are going through so can relate to it.

MISE-EN-SCENE

At the beginning, the main character is in an army uniform. This identifies him as quite a powerful, well built, healthy man which is the stereotypical male character. Also, we see the bad guy in a police uniform later on in the trailer which links with the idea that he also has a lot of power and can do a lot of damage and get away with it. Apart from that, the costume is quite casual throughout all characters. The facial expressions shown throughout the trailer prove that the film is going to go from happy laughter to sad tears to then anger and frustration. There are moments when the couple couldn't be happier with each other, however, there are parts where they are both in separate rooms and they are both expressing there anger and frustration towards one another. The lighting is either daylight or sunset/sunrise. This is a great way to encourage the idea of a romantic setting and the idea of feeling safe and happy.

BBFC Certification

other ratings consist of:

The U symbol stands for Universal. A U film should be suitable for audiences aged four years and over. However, it is impossible to predict what might upset a particular child, especially at this lower end of the category range. At U we only allow infrequent use of very mild bad language (e.g. ‘damn’ and ‘hell’). Violence will generally be very mild. A U film may include brief fight scenes or moments where characters are placed in danger. However, moments of emotional stress or threat will be quickly resolved and the outcome will be reassuring. At U there will not normally be references to illegal drugs or drugs misuse unless there is a very clear anti-drugs or educational message which will be understood by a younger audience.

PG stands for Parental Guidance. This means a film is suitable for general viewing, but some scenes may be unsuitable for young children. A PG film should not unsettle a child aged around eight or older. Parents should consider whether the content may upset younger, or more sensitive, children. A PG film will not contain any theme which is inappropriate for a child. PG works can explore challenging issues such as bullying, bereavement or racism. A PG film will not contain any theme which is inappropriate for a child. PG works can explore challenging issues such as bullying, bereavement or racism. Violence will usually be mild. There should be no detail of violence in a PG work, so while there might be some blood, we would not see how the injury was inflicted in strong detail.

Films classified 12A and video works classified 12 contain material that is not generally suitable for children aged under 12. No one younger than 12 may see a 12A film in a cinema unless accompanied by an adult. Adults planning to take a child under 12 to view a 12A film should consider whether the film is suitable for that child. The 12A requires an adult to accompany any child under 12 seeing a 12A film at the cinema. This is enforced by cinema staff and a cinema may lose its license if adult accompaniment is not enforced for children under 12 admitted to a 12A film. The BBFC's Guidelines state that strong language may be passed at 12 or 12A, depending on the manner in which it is used, who is using the language, its frequency and any special contextual justification. Sex may be briefly and discreetly portrayed at 12A or 12. At 12A, moderate violence is allowed but it should not dwell on detail.

Films rated 18 are for adults. No-one under 18 is allowed to see an 18 film at the cinema or buy / rent an 18 rated video. No 18 rated works are suitable for children. 8 works are for adults and can contain strong issues such as:
  •   very strong violence
  •   frequent strong language and / or very strong language
  •   strong portrayals of sexual activity
  •   scenes of sexual violence
  •   strong horror
  •   strong blood and gore
  •   real sex (in some circumstances)
  •   discriminatory language and behaviour

Movie Title Ideas

The final movie title I chose was
'Whatever It Takes'
I thought it sounded strong and unique and definitely links with the idea that I am going for within my trailer. I thought if this name when i was thinking if my script. It was a comment that i wanted to use as the last words heard in the trailer by the main male character. it felt like a strong enough comment to then make into the title. This way the title links directly to what is going on within the trailer.

Genre

During this process I was looking at all the different genres and what would work best for me. I didn't want to do a horror because that's what I did last year; I wanted to try something different.

I was then thinking of an action/adventure movie.
Examples of Action Movies:

  • Fast and Furious
  • James Bond
  • White House Down
  • Die Hard
Although it would've been fun to create, I don't have the right equipment and setting to create something dramatic in that way. With an action, I would need to increase the number of actors that I used for the trailer as it would need to be more action packed and dangerous.

Finally, I thought about doing a comedy, but honestly, I wouldn't be able to think of anything funny to do. I would have spent too much time coming up with something funny to do and not enough time actually putting it together.
Examples of Comedy Movies:

  • Ride Along
  • Inbetweeners
  • Bad Neighbors
  • The Hangover
